The establishment of the Public Debt Audit Commission
has been announced by the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Zoi
Konstantopoulou, in a press conference together with SYRIZA MEP Sofia
Sakorafa and the Belgian economist Éric Toussaint.
Ms. Sakorafa
will be responsible for the communication of the operation abroad,
while Mr. Toussaint will take over the scientific part of the
process, being considered an expert on audit debts of other
countries. Among other things, parts of the Greek debt associated
with the organization of the 2004 Olympic Games will be examined, as
well as those connected with armament projects and the Siemens
scandal.
The goal of
the Commission will be to uncover the truth about the responsibility
of the policies and acts or omissions that ejected Greece's debt. The
first official meeting of the Commission is set for early April while
in June, the first results obtained, will be presented at the
International Congress on the debt.
The Speaker
of the Hellenic Parliament said that the loans taken by the country
will be examined on matching to the real purpose for which they were
taken, and will be checked which part was disappeared in absentia of
the people, which part of the debt is burdensome, hateful and
disgraceful and therefore should not be repaid.
Éric Toussaint said that his research will be extended further back from
2010 and noted that the Commission in cooperation with the Greek
Parliament will examine and analyze the conventions of the period
before 2010 (armaments, Olympics, Siemens, etc.) that contributed to
the growth of debt.
Sofia
Sakorafa stated that she will utilize her institutional role, making
every effort to become clear to the people of Europe that their
sacrifices preserve the principal responsible of the crisis, the
financial system.
Therefore,
one of the three key moves that the government should do, is
